Sunday Riley Effortless Breathable Tinted Primer Review

February 21, 2012

I got asked about my thoughts on the Sunday Riley Effortless Breathable Tinted Primer after I mentioned it was one of my all time favorite base products. Sunday Riley is a relatively new cosmetic brand – they are known for their skincares and they recently released a remarkable collection of makeup which is only available at Barneys for now. I was initially interested in their skin care products while I was browsing, but the gorgeous SA insisted that I should not miss the tinted primer which is their signature product. I normally do not like SAs trying to sell me a particular product, but I was totally sold after I noticed there were many gorgeous girls dropping by the counter just to pick up this primer. So I managed to get myself the last bottle of this on that day! *phew*..

The Sunday Riley Tinted Primer is housed in a plastic bottle, the packaging is sturdy but I won’t say luxurious. On the contrary, the ingredients are the most luxurious you could ever get for a tinted moisturizer and that’s what makes it stand out from norm. It has

– Peptide: for regeneration and anti-glycation.

– Sodium Hyaluronate : a form of hyarulonic acid that contains higher molecular weight (totally out of topic – most fillers are made of that) that leaves skin fine-textured and appear more plumped.

– Paraben Free

I thought it was a perfect formulation for me as I am constantly on the look out for products that prevent the first signs of aging and the first two ingredients are known for that. The texture is mousse-like and ultra lightweight, and it feels silky smooth and melts into the skin upon application.  The use of hyaluronate never enhances the dry patches on the skin and keeps my skin hydrated throughout the day without getting greasy. The coverage is about the same as any sheer foundation, and it leaves the skin appearing more even toned, smooth and finely textured with a touch of dewiness. I normally let it settle for a few minutes, then quite amazingly, my skin appears noticeably more plumped and radiant, and the signs of dullness is diminished.   I have seen such results with a good moisturizer, but for a makeup product that can deliver this it truly blows me away.

The Sunday Riley Tinted Primer can be worn alone for a sheer wash of color, or followed with your foundation if you prefer more coverage. As for my complexion, I like to use it alone with a touch of under eyes concealer and I’m good to go. It also keeps my base makeup looking like it’s freshly applied all day.

Full ingredient list:

Bottom Line: An amazing combination of a sheer foundation packed into an ultra luxurious moisturizer! I purchased mine here.

Oh this product seems amazing. I’ve never seen the brand before though! What is the pricing like?

This must be an amazing product! I’m always on the lookout for sheer ‘your skin but better base makeup products’, and this sounds to be IT!

I feel, on bad skin days, when my skin has to fight with unevennes, flakes or pimples, I usually don’t look the best with a foundation, as it will somehow accentuate the flaws even more for some weird reason.

So this products seems to be very worth trying out for my issues. Is this product available anywhere online? Thanks so much for your review, Reika!

Reika February 23, 2012 at 2:08 pm

I can’t agree with you more Jess! When my skin is dry or dehydrated, most foundation tend to enhance the dryness even more! In that case I like to reach for a tinted moisturizer or bb cream as the moisturizing property helps to blend the product in with skin better.
Sorry Jess I don’t know where to find sunday riley other than barneys..

Bergdorf Goodman has the entire line. You can go to the store, or they will ship anywhere in the country. I have found the service to be quite wonderful.

jocelyn February 22, 2012 at 8:38 pm

are the other 2 chantecaille and cle de peau? or dior’s nudeskin? chanel?

Reika February 23, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Yes you are right! Chantecaille foundation is one of my hg! I shall do a review soon.
Review for cle de peau can be found here:

I won’t repurchase dior nudeskin, and for some weird reason I don’t like my chanel aqualumiere anymore..

Love this stuff! My Barney’s was OOS for so long. I was fortunate to get it 3 weeks ago and I have used it everyday since. Long lasting, nice texture- a perfect dash out the door product. My only complaints are that so many people will find the Light shade, too dark. Another plus would be an SPF. All in all, my favorite product of 2012:)

Reika February 23, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Glad you like it Laura! Yes I have the same issue with the light shade, it’s a little too dark for me! But I can live with that as it will really makes the skin appear to look better without any trace of makeup on.

Walls February 23, 2012 at 2:29 am

Thanks for the review, Reika! This product has been on my radar since I first read a review of it on The Non-Blonde. I want to get several more Sunday Riley beauty products as well, so I am amassing a wish-list that probably won’t be fulfilled until my birthday or Christmas. I _may_ crumble and get one of the eyeshadow singles in the meanwhile.

Reika February 23, 2012 at 2:14 pm should crumble, as far as I can remember their e/s have a nice collection of neutral shades, and the textures are divine!

Walls February 25, 2012 at 9:26 am

Hehe, all you lovely beauty bloggers are such enablers! But I say that with much love and respect as well as a shared devotion to all great beauty products.

I don’ know. After all the rave about this tinted primer I got on the phone with my Barneys and ordered one.I was super exited to get it and was ……..disapointed.First,when I pushed on the pump some clear ,oily liquid came out .I was waiting and waiting ,pushing and pushing before I saw any color .And secondly,on the face it looked like any primer,no color,no cover ,no anything.I am sooo wanted to love it! 🙁
Another overhyped product!

Reika February 23, 2012 at 2:17 pm

Yes it is a very sheer product, hardly offers any coverage.
The texture of this primer should be mousse like….I didn’t get any oily liquid..

petrina February 23, 2012 at 1:52 pm

I wish we could get this here! I would really like to try the skincare

Reika February 23, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Yes there are too many nice brands that aren’t available in Australia! How frustrating is that…

jocelyn February 24, 2012 at 6:28 pm

just to be sure the 3rd hg foundation is cle de peau’s right? please do the foundation reviews soon!!! i can’t wait lol

Jeslynj February 28, 2012 at 10:01 pm

Hi Reika,

This sounds like such a good product. I’ve been on the hunt for a tinted moisturizer, or some sort of base product. However, I have oily skin, so do you think this would work okay w/ my skin type? or is there any other product you could recommend?

rach March 1, 2012 at 6:26 am

Will you show a picture of how it looks like when the product is just pumped out from the bottle? As I just received mine and the ingredients seem separated and upon pumping out, it’s liquid. Thanks so much!

Rola March 23, 2012 at 7:56 pm

I really like this primer when I tried it on at Barneys last month, but unfortunately they have been out of my color in light. I need to call them again and I can’t wait to get my hands on it:)

Jeremy September 23, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Can’t wait to try this. But I bet you didn’t know that DermStore has 10% off any product & free 1-3 day shipping so I will purchase from them 😉

Reika September 23, 2012 at 11:49 pm

Thank you so much for letting me know! I had no idea Dermstore has sunday riley!!

elizabeth lind October 7, 2012 at 3:13 pm

I thought this makeup would be terrific because the color matched my skin. I purchased mine at Barney’s NYC. Once home, I noticed the consistency was not the same as the tester in the store, it was runny and seemed to have separated. Back to Barney’s. The rep said there had been some problems with the formula and they company was reformulating the makeup and several other products. No new stock in the store.
Wouldn’t you think that they would do the research BEFORE sending out the products?
My questions about the problem went unanswered by the Customer Service Department of Sunday Riley.
Moving on to another brand,

jill October 16, 2012 at 10:32 pm

You can also get Sunday Riley at Bergdorf Goodman. They send all over the country and the service is amazing!!
