My Latest Skincare Routine

October 24, 2012

My updated skincare routine as requested by my readers. To recap, my skin is dehydrated inside but can look oily outside. My main skin concern is dehydration and skin congestion around the t-zone area. I am also at a sad old age where my skin metabolism rate has gone downhill – as it takes forever for any scar to heal. I do get occasional breakout so I always incorporate a powerful serum which increases and stimulates the cell turnover rate as it is vital to speed up the skin renewal process so it helps to clear up my scars within a short time.

I always use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser to cleanse my skin in the morning. At the moment I am using the Lancôme Galateis Douceur Gentle Softening Cleansing Fluid. I bought the jumbo size (400ml) so I can use a generous amount of it everyday with a special massage tool. It’s gentle and makes my skin super soft after washing, and in conjunction with the massage tool it helps to eliminate the water retention of my morning puffy face. Followed by Lancôme HYDRA ZEN Anti-Stress Moisturizing Aqua Gel which is just an average hydrating gel-to-water type toner. It comes out like gel and transforms into water upon touching the skin. The Clarins Shaping Facial Lift Serum is my absolute must-have for the morning – I have gone through tubes and tubes of it. The smell is relaxing and it helps to lift and sharpen the facial contours. Dr Brandt Pore Effect is applied over the t-zone (reviewed here). The last step is to apply a thick layer of my all time favorite moisturizer Dr. CiLabo Aqua Collagen Gel. For those of you who haven’t heard of the brand – Dr CiLabo is a celebrity dermatologist in Japan. The collagen gel is the signature product of his line, and the story behind the product was that he was very frustrated that he could not find a perfect moisturizer for his elite clients so he developed his own! It was so good so he started selling this to the general public. I got hooked on since it was first released which was 10 years ago! It is lightweight, absorbs instantly, plumping up my skin, stimulate collagen and most importantly keeps my skin staying hydrated all day long. Clinique All About Eyes feels quite soothing to the eyes and moisturizes as well.

The cleanser and toner used are the same as my morning routine. The Lancôme Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector is my recent favorite anti-aging serum. The patent ingredient is the LR 2414 (aka jasmonic acid) which enhances the skin’s natural self renewal processes. It minimizes skin imperfections, pore sizes and improves skin’s overall texture. I really love it because it works for clearing up my scars. With this serum the new scar forms a scab and then comes off with a faded mark within days. La Mer’s Crème de La Mer Moisturizing Cream is another all time favorite moisturizer. If Dr CiLabo Collagen Gel is the perfect hydrator, then La Mer is one level up for giving me an incredible luminous complexion. The key to using this moisturizer effectively is to activate the ingredient by emulsifying this thick cream. I found that the enclosed instruction never worked for me. Here is a little discovery I made – warm up the cream when there is still some Lancome Visionnaire remnant  left in the palm. Within seconds this moisturizer turns into a fluid elixir-like texture so it absorbs into the skin immediately. The combination works like a dream, and I really love the way my skin looks every morning – clear and luminous 🙂 For the eyes I use La Prarie’s Cellular Eye Contour Cream.

SKII Facial Treatment Mask once a week, and SKII Sign’s Eye Mask once every fortnight.

Thank you Reika! Your posts are so thorough. Just curious, what kind of massage tool do you use? Have you tried Clarisonic? I’m curious about that.

Reika October 25, 2012 at 11:29 am

This is the massage tool I am using – cheap and effective 🙂
I have tried it at my friend’s place, and I liked it but I think it would be too harsh for my skin for long term use…

Annie October 27, 2012 at 10:10 am

Im gonna get this!!! But it Got the same shape like whoo essential massage tool? I found it better to clean when its made of plastic though. Im noy sure where to get one of these? :)))))

And for fading marks, whoo intensive works really well. But of course you need to regain skin barrier before any natural body process can have a proper recovery by itself.:)

Reika October 27, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Yes exactly the same shape and it’s made of rose stone (not plastic)! and it feels more smooth to glide over the face than wood 🙂 so I highly recommend it!
try ebay..?
Thanks for the friend just got me some whoo skincare from Korea..can’t wait to receive them!!

Annie November 10, 2012 at 12:29 pm

Thank you 😀 i got it. Will probably tey it this week 🙂 and I want to give you a big smooch!!!!! I got maybelline mascara and it works like a magic!!!!!!!!! If it wasnt your recommendation,i would still be a sad panda xD

great skincare! What do you use as an SPF? I have a similar skintype and always struggle to find one that doesn’t make me go shiny within 20 min.

Reika October 25, 2012 at 11:32 am

Ha I don’t normally wear sunscreen on a daily basis (I’m bad!!!) since most of my base products such as makeup base or foundation contains SPF..If I am outdoor for a long time I use Shiseido Anessa sunscreen and carry the Peter Thomas Roth mineral sunscreen powder with me for touching up. This one

Hi Reika! I am also wondering what kind of massage tool you use?

Reika October 25, 2012 at 11:29 am
Jangsty October 25, 2012 at 12:20 pm

Many thanks! That looks almost identical to the tool which goes with The History of Whoo massage mask/cream
Will try to find it on ebay 🙂

Reika October 25, 2012 at 12:54 pm

Yep that’s right!! I like the tool so much so I bought this as well 🙂 It’s made of some special stone instead of wood.

Aminah October 25, 2012 at 3:29 pm

elliade October 26, 2012 at 3:45 am

How’s the Lancome toner? I am thinking of changing my Clinique’s toner..

Reika October 26, 2012 at 5:02 am

It’s okay as it’s quite hydrating, and I would say it’s better than Clinique 🙂

Petrina October 27, 2012 at 2:39 am

You’ve been using quite a lot of Lancôme! I find that Visionaire did not do a thing for me so I stopped using it but its supposed to be more effective with Genefique so I might try that combo out. Just not sure about shelling out more towards a dud. The only Lancôme product I’m loyal to is their bi facil and sunscreen – UV Expert GN Shield SPF 50 – you should try it! It’s specially formulated for Asian skin and the perfect weight and texture. I’ve been using this for the last 5+ years ( and in its former name as well).

Do you still use your other skincare products, Aesop, Trilogy etc?

Reika October 27, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Lol I know which is strange as I am not the biggest fan of lancome..but I am very impressed with the result I am getting from Visionaire and I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. Yes I am also thinking to add Genefique to my routine 🙂
Thanks for the recs, I was looking out for new sunscreen to buy and I will definitely try out the lancome one! Is it tinted or just like a normal sunscreen?
I have finished using Aesop and Trilogy. I much prefer Aesop and I will be trying out more products from them later.

Petrina October 27, 2012 at 1:27 pm

There is a bb base version and a non tinted version I like them both 🙂 I’m not sure if its available in Australia though as it does say on the tube it’s made specifically for Asian skin. I get my parents to buy a few tubes every time they come to visit fr Msia.

Petrina October 27, 2012 at 1:29 pm

Sorry I just want to add that the bb base version does not give me a grey cast but you do have to wait about 15-20 seconds for it to Colour match your skin. They both absorb quickly without an oily feel.

Jenni October 27, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Another great post! i love reading other’s skincare routine – like your skin – mine appear oily on the T-zone but its seriously dehydrated. When choosing creams and serums i’ve to be extra careful, i dont’ like an oily slick yet it might just be what my skin needs :/ tricky situation.

You like Aesop? I’ve been wondering about them sometime – which products from them would you recommend?
I bought Clarins Double serum (the new version) lately – can’t wait to try it after hearing how you like their facial lifting serum!!

Jen 🙂

Reika October 28, 2012 at 12:57 pm

Yes I like Aesop. Since you don’t like oily products, I highly recommend their oil free hydrating serum, mandarin facial cream and their star product the triple C facial gel!

Rola October 28, 2012 at 1:53 am

The only thing that really works for me in the SK-II line is the treatment masks, they are the best!

Kimberley October 28, 2012 at 11:41 am

Oh this post is great. I’d really love to hear more about the SK-II masks, the Clarins Shaping Facial Lift and the Pores No More!

Kristine November 2, 2012 at 5:24 pm

Thank you for posting this, Reika! I’m going to order Lancome Visionnaire, Dr. Ci Labo Collagen Gel, and Creme De La Mer Moisturizing Cream. How do you like the La Prarie eye cream? Do you feel that it has reversed any signs of aging or do you use it more for maintenance? I have been using Caudalie Premier Cru eye cream and I like it but I’m not sure if I see any drastic results…kind of looking for something a little more potent.

Do you or have you used anything for fading older acne scars or freckles? I’ve been using Caudalie Vinoperfect for about two weeks now and I do notice that I have a brighter more even complexion and my acne scars are more pink vs. brown now, but I was wondering you had any recommendations or anything else that you have had success with?

I’ve also ordered Armani foundation, La Mer powder, and Pore No More based your reviews from your other posts!

Reika November 4, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Hi Kristine, I am so glad to hear that! I can’t rave enough about the combo of Lancome visionnaire and Creme de la Mer, they are almost like made for each other. And I can’t wait to hear what you think of them 🙂
I have just started using the La Prarie eye cream, so far I haven’t seen any visible result from it. So I guess I won’t repurchase this product and I much prefer the La Prarie caviar eye serum.
I have also used the Caudalie Vinoperfect and unfortunately it didn’t work for me. Most brightening products I have used require patience and takes a long time to see the result. Therefore I really prefer to use a cellular serum to stimulate the cell turnover rate when the scar is new.
For instant results, I like IPL treatment. I only had 2 sessions done and OMG..all of my scars/freckles/pores were gone but they came back eventually.

Kristine November 5, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Hi Reika, I’ve ordered the Visionnaire and Dr. Ci Labo Collagen Gel, and I also ordered the Kinerase C8 kit because and Dr. Ci Labo White 377 because I read some good reviews about them and was curious (have you tried Kinerase or Kinerase C8 and what your thoughts on that?), and ordered the Koji eye lash curler YSL Touche Eclat based on your reviews. Then I when I placing the order for the La Mer cream, I got a bit confused on whether I should by the regular cream or soft cream? Have you tried both and would you recommend one over the other?

I’ve thought about IPL but I’m so scared of the recovery time! How long does it take to recover?

Reika November 7, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Hi Kristine, the soft cream is their latest release which has a lighter texture than the original version, so it would be easier to emulsify the cream (the activation process). Since you already have the Lancome vissionaire, I find that the original version goes perfect with it. The visionnaire just turns the cream into liquid – amazing!
There is absolutely no downtime with IPL. I had it in conjunction with facials. Your face becomes slightly more red (but not that noticeable) after the treatment, and you can resume your daily activity as per normal. But you need to be more cautious with sun protection and moisturising as the skin tends to get dry and more sensitive to the sun for 2 weeks after the treatment.
No I haven’t tried Kinerase C8, and would love to hear your thoughts on it!

kristine November 7, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Thanks, Reika! I will order the original formula of La Mer cream. I’ll also set an appointment soon for an IPL. I used to get facials from her for acne treatment (micro derm, glycolic peel, and extractions) from my dermatologist monthly but I stopped because I moved farther from her, but I should make the trip–I know my dermatologist does IPL. I’ll try that next week and report back. I forgot to mention that I also ordered the Koji eyelash curler based on your review, and OMG! I am thrilled that I can finally curl my lashes! I eyes are shaped very very similarly to yours and it fits perfectly in my eye socket like you said it fit yours. I kept showing my husband, “look look look it fits!” and them I showed him a euro one and he was like , “wow, your eyelash curler really IS made for Asian eyes!” I also got my touche eclat in today, and also WOW! It doesn’t exacerbate the fine lines around my eyes and adds just that little bit of “oomph” I need around my eyes… I can’t wait until the rest of the stuff you have recommended come in… bet it will change my life! I’m so happy I found you and your blog!

Kristine January 4, 2013 at 8:18 pm

Just thought I’d give you an update. The Visionniare is AMAZING at preventing acne scars! I would actually go as far as to say it’s the only product that I know of that actually PREVENTS. I think you have discovered something very significant here!!! Lancome should put research into this and credit you.

Thank you so much for all of your wonderful recommendations…you changed my life!

Nelly May 16, 2013 at 1:06 pm

Hi Reika, I am new in your blog. Thanks for doing all the swatches, review & tutorial. It’s really helpful. Really love your blog!! Anyway, what do you use to clean your daily makeup? my skin is normal to dry and I find it quite difficult to remove my makeup and sometimes irritate my skin. I use the Biotherm Biosource instant cleansing micellar water. any recommendation? thanks

Reika May 17, 2013 at 2:17 pm

Hi my favorite makeup remover is the eve lom cleanser, and I also really like the bobbi brown balm cleanser. Makeup removing oil is also a good option for normal to dry skin, and I recommend Nars, SKIIs, Shu Uemura’s and Kanebo Impress. Hope it helps!
