My Daily Skincare Routine – Part 1

September 1, 2011

This is a long overdue post as I have been requested to do a rundown on my daily skincare routine many times. Well the reason I’ve been procrastinating was because I had no idea where to begin! Between makeup and skincare, I am probably more passionate about skincare although I don’t talk much about it on this blog as often as makeup. I shop and go through lots of products every month. My approach is quite open-minded so I’m always open to try new things – I am not one of those girls who thoroughly check the ingredients before making a purchase. As long as I think the product will work for my skin type I’m always happy to give it a go.

Just some background information before I embark on my skincare routine. My skin is oily on the surface and dehydrated inside. If it is not well hydrated my makeup would appear just sitting on top of my skin whilst it still produces a lot of oil throughout the day. I also have pigmentation (freckles) across my cheeks. Other than that, I don’t have wrinkles, fine lines, and no signs of loss of firmness. My main goal is to keep my skin looking and feeling fresh, supple, moisturized, firm and plumped with no visible appearance of pores.

These are the products I have been using everyday for the past 2 months. Some of these are my holy grails, some of these are new products I have been trialing through, and I like the results so I have incorporated them into my daily regime. I tend to go for products that are gentle, lightweight and hydrating with some anti-aging benefits. Anything that is too rich and oily will cause congestion or even break-outs to my skin.

As you can see I am not loyal to any brands haha..I generally prefer high end brands for basic skincare but I also have a love for Asian drugstore brands for masks (I have tons of them!).

My Morning Routine:

I clean my face with Elemis Rehydarting Rosepetal Cleanser, then I apply SK II Facial Treatment Essence generously on my face, and pat my face till it absorbs. SK II Aqua Physics Serum is full of pitera and hyaluronic acid which keeps my skin supple and hydrated all day. Finish with Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Moisturising Gel. (probably the best product out of the entire white lucent range)

For my eyes I like to use La Prairie Cellular Revitalizing Eye Gel – have gone through tons of anti-puffiness eye gels and this is the only one that really works!

My Evening Routine:

I remove my makeup with the Eve Lom Cleanser with its muslin cloth – my HG cleanser, then apply the SK II Facial Treatment Essence liberally again. Serum is an essential item in my skincare routine – at the moment I am using the Trilogy Age Proof  Nutrient Plus Firming Serum and the CQ10 Booster Serum interchangeably.  Trilogy is one of my favorite organic skincare lines that is based in New Zealand. If you are into natural skincare I highly recommend giving them a go as they are affordable and really deliver what they claim to. Moisturizer is switched to the Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Moisturizing Emulsion W – it’s designed for nightime so the texture is slighter richer than the gel version.

I also use a different eye cream at night time – the Shiseido Bio Performance Super Eye Contour Cream keeps the fine lines at bay without being too nutritional for my age so it doesn’t cause any milia. Don’t forget to take care of the neck girls! I am using the Shiseido Benefiance Concentrated Neck Contour Treatment.

That’s it for my basic skincare. I use more products as special treatments throughout the week so there will be part 2, part 3….

I thought I used a lot of products – you’re just like me, lol!! You will never be sorry for taking such great care of your skin, trust me!

Reika September 2, 2011 at 1:26 am

haha Jamilla judging by your amazing skin, I will continue to use loads of products on my face 😛

popblush September 1, 2011 at 10:30 pm

You use a great range of skincare products. I have tried Benefiance and really liked it. I’m interested to try the White Lucent Brightening Gel as I have heard great things about it.

I think I need brightening and anti-ageing skincare for my freckles and fine lines under my eyes. I am envious that you don’t have any! hehe =D

Reika September 2, 2011 at 1:32 am

As you can tell I really like Shiseido skincare, they always seem to work for my skintype.
hehe thanks..maybe it’s because I’ve beening using eye cream since I was in highschool! Prevention is better than cure 😛

novia September 1, 2011 at 11:20 pm

i tried triology’s rosehip oil before and it’s abit too oily. isn’t the serum too oily to be put before moisturizer? just wondering if you can wear both of em together

Reika September 2, 2011 at 1:21 am

Hi novia. trilogy’s rosehip oil didn’t work for me either as it’s too greasy for my skintype. The nutrient plus firming serum is extremely lightweight and absorbs into my skin instantly. It hydrates and plumping as it contains hyaluronic acid and other natural firming ingredients without silicone. Best of all it smells amazing. So I highly recommend this one. The Q10 serum has the same consistency as the rosehip oil, but slightly less oily and absorbs into my skin better. I only apply it on my cheeks and decolletage so 1 drop is enough. Probably every 2-3 days I use these two serums together (firming serum first then the CQ10 serum), so far they’ve been doing a great job! No breakouts, no congestion 🙂

Amazing!!! I go through products so quickly, and I’m on a student budget, so I can’t buy these things, but I really want to use SK II so badly! So I’m using DHC, and it’s been pretty good. I also absolutely must use Clarisonic. If I don’t, my pores start to expand! So jealous of your luxurious skincare routine!

Reika September 2, 2011 at 1:39 am

Lol you are TOO young to use SK II, wait till you hit your mid 20s 🙂 DHC is good, I used them before. I am probably the last person on this planet who doesn’t own a Clarisonic.

onlyfr33b33 September 4, 2011 at 5:32 pm

I can’t live without my Clarisonic! It really helps to extend the life of my toners/serums because my skin is prepped and absorbs the product really well. I really only have to use a pea sized amount of almost every product.

I can definitely sympathize with the oily surface, dry within skin type. Mine is the same way.

Have you tried any glycolic acid cleansing pads? They’ve helped me somewhat with moisturization and overall exfoliation. Also, Juju cosmetics Hyaluronic essence is quite good for adding moisture.

Reika September 2, 2011 at 5:23 am

Took me years to realise my skin is dry inside. I used to mistreat my skin by using lots of oil controlling products and they made my skin worse and oilier!

Yeh I use some peel that contains glycolic acid once a week. It keeps my skin congestion free 🙂 Juju hyaluronic essence was too sticky for my liking…so I didn’t repurchase. Glad that it works for you 🙂

Monica September 2, 2011 at 9:45 am

Hi Reika! I’m a bit relieved after reading this post that I’m not the only one that buy a lot of skin care :p
anyway have you tried la prairie? I went to their counter and their products are really expensive.

Reika September 2, 2011 at 10:15 am

Hi Monica, don’t worry you are not alone!
Yes I have used some products from la praire. My favorite products are the cellular retexturizing booster (it’s amazing!!) and the smart cream. The caviar range is good but way too rich for my skin type.

Tina September 2, 2011 at 11:17 am

Hi Reika, thanks so much for posting your skincare routine. I am really interested in the SKII skincare line, but i don’t know what to try first ( serum and facial treatment essence, which one do u like better ??). My skin type is the same as yours, I tried La Mer gel cream for a while, and it’s ok, it did not do much for me. Your skin is absolutely beautiful in my opinion, so i will definitely check out the products that u use !!!

Reika September 3, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Hi Tina thank you so much. I won’t say my skin is that good but it has definitely improved a lot once I found the right products for me. I have tried a lot of products from SKII, my personal favorites are the SKII treatment essence (gone through 3 bottles already), the aqua serum, and the melting cream. The cellumination essence and the cream are amazing too and they have brightening effect but slightly less hydrating for winter. If you don’t know which one to try first, you can always buy the sample versions from SASA first 🙂

Jess September 3, 2011 at 12:37 am

Thanks for sharing your skincare routine, Reika! High five for such a great skincare regimen!

Joyce September September 3, 2011 at 12:44 am

I’ve tried a sample of Shiseido Bio Performance Super Eye Contour Cream and absolutely loved its texture. Very velvety. Pity the DFS set came with the serum which I already have, might just wait out for a promo, during the Xmas season.

Have you tried Elizabeth Arden Extreme Glove capsules? I have a 10-day sample if you like 🙂

Petrina September 5, 2011 at 11:37 am

I love Trilogy products too! Have you tried the Age Proof Contour Roller for eyes? I used to use Shiseido & the SK II treatment essence a lot but have since switched to more organic/ less chemically skin care.

Reika September 7, 2011 at 12:15 am

Thanks Petrina. hehe….I have also been switching between organic and non organic brands. I really like this age proof range by trilogy, definitely going to check out the coutour roller for eyes 🙂

Annie September 5, 2011 at 8:48 pm

You should try la mer. It works like a miracle like it claims:) I have been the faithful customer for the last 2 years. :))))

Reika September 7, 2011 at 12:12 am

Thanks for recs Annie, I love la mer as well 🙂 The hydrating infusion, brightening infusion and the gel cream have done wonders for my skin!

Annie September 7, 2011 at 2:12 am

I totally agreed with you 😀 and their eye cream is not comparable to La Prairie Cellular Revitalizing Eye Gel ? I’m always curious about this brand but got the samples in the past and my skin broke out in no time :/ skin carvier sounds very promising. Any future review for more of La Prairie? 🙂

Maria October 20, 2011 at 1:39 pm

wow! such an interesting post (and all 3 parts of your skincare routine!).
i look through your blog now, so i hope you don’t mind if i comment even old posts 🙂
Reika, i am so happy to see that we have a common point of view on skincare and moreover, we have almost the same skin type.
i also adore trying new brands and new treatments… and i also saw good results when i stopped buying things made for OILY skin! so i totally agree with you in this.
i’m not sure that it will be possible but i would be happy if you write sometimes about new skincare you found\tried\liked\not-liked… i mean not only the things you love – your must haves, but something that catch your attention….

thank you!

Reika October 20, 2011 at 2:25 pm

Thank you so much Maria! I am so glad that you agree with me 🙂 I wish all the girls who suffer from oily skin can give more gentle skin care products a try!
Yeh I would love to write more posts on skin care as this is one of my biggest passions.

LibertyRose October 20, 2011 at 3:27 pm

FYI, after reading this post I went to the closest SK-II counter to look for the Aqua Physics Serum, but was told by the SA that this serum works more like a toner. The most hydrating serum of the brand is the Repair C (it’s multi-purpose and also brightens, etc.), which is supposedly 10 times stronger. The Aqua Physics Serum didn’t really solve my problem, so my first foray into SK-II wasn’t all that successful. I also got the Whitening Specialist and let’s see how that goes.

Felicia January 3, 2012 at 1:18 pm

Hi! Came across your site when googling on SK-II! I’m 22 currently and I’m not sute if I should go ahead and try SK-II. (have got 2 bottles currently at home) I read that you don’t like products that are too rich but SK-II seems to work fine for you? I’ve heard from friends that SK-II are too rich for them (they’re in their late 20s already). I’ve clogged pores and face’s dull and has acne marks. Nothing seems to work well for me so I’m really considering giving SK-II a try but I’m really afraid that it might break me out! What are your thoughts? 🙂

Reika January 4, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Hi Felicia, the SKII essence has a liquid consistency so it’s very light imo. The essence is great for clearing up and balancing my skin and never causes any break out, I don’t think it helps to unclog the pores though. One thing to note is that some people have experienced breaking out once they stopped using it.

Cendana January 3, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Came across your blog because I was searching for reviews on SK-II Cellumination Mask-In Lotion 🙂 and your skincare routine looks like what mine kind of looks like too. I used to use Shiseido and still like their products, althought, like you, I switch up and mix products brands… and I am on to incorporating SK-II FTE into my routine!

Reika January 4, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Thanks Cendada. Good to know we have the same skincare routine 😀

Felicia January 23, 2012 at 9:26 am

HI.. i jst read ur blog by googling on searching sk-ii fte combining with white lucent moisturizer. i was sk-ii cellumination series user but i didn’t see any significant improvement on brightening effect, but FTE is very good in controlling sebum. i haven’t tried shiseido white lucent. Is it ok if i combine SK-II FTE then continuing with white lucent moisturizer in doing brightening effects? whats your thoughts? thank you..

Zarchi September 11, 2012 at 9:50 am

Hi Ms. Reika,
I would like to verify that which skincare product (Shiseido or SKII ) is suitable for the dry skin? Kindly provide a piece of advice. Thank u so much.

Reika September 12, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Hi Zarchi, the SKII repair c serum paired with their signature cream are great for the dry skin!
