My Best Hair Care Products

March 11, 2012

This is another topic that is frequently requested by  my readers – my best hair care products and routine. It is quite a challenging post for me, and anyone who has been to my bathroom would agree with it is just filled with an abundance of hair care and body products. They always walk out of my bathroom with the same question “Can I ever finish that many products?” Oh well…nope! But it’s the same with my makeup collection or many other vanity items. I just like to constantly buy them and I am always on the lookout for newer and better products!

So back to the hair topic…Unlike most Asian girls who are blessed with a head of straight, glossy and smooth hair, I was born with naturally wavy hair and prone to frizz. The grass is certainly always greener on the other side, as I always wanted to have sleek and straight hair, so for years I have been battling with my natural hair to achieve the desired look. I have been coloring my hair ever since I was in high school, and after experimenting with every possible hair color on the planet, I have settled down with ashy highlights, and I think it is the best my hair has ever looked.

I get my hair colored on a frequent basis so my hair gets very dry and damaged. The utmost important goal in my haircare routine is to supply as much protein to my hair for strengthening and repairing. The KERASTASE RESISTANCE BAIN DE FORCE Reinforcing and Refinishing Shampoo for weakened hair and CIMENT ANTI-USURE Reinforcing and Refinishing Treatment for Damaged Ends are my everyday protein shampoo and conditioner – they make my hair much stronger and significantly reduce the breakage of it. I alternate them with Fekkai Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo and PHYTO PHYTOSESAME Express Hydrating Conditioner, and they are a heaven-sent for dry and lackluster hair. I am especially loving the Phyto Conditioner at the moment, as it has a lotion texture and melts into your hair upon application. It keeps my hair so hydrated without weighing it down.

Ashy color can turn brassy or orangey after some time if your hair is naturally dark. To prevent that I use the Matrix So Silver shampoo once a week to eliminate the dull yellowness in my hair. I also use the KERASTASE BAIN CLARIFIANT Regulating Shampoo for Oily Scalp once a week – it’s a clarifying shampoo that removes the built up of my hair and purifies the scalp. It’s the best I’ve ever used as it doesn’t strip the natural oil and makes my hair feel feathery light and clean without being crunchy.

I like to treat my hair with an intensive treatment mask after it is deep cleansed with a clarifying shampoo. My favorite picks for repairing damaged hairs are the ALTERNA CAVIAR ANTI-AGING SEASILK Hair Masque and Fekkai PROTEIN Rx Anti-Breakage Treatment Masque. The Alterna completely rejuvenates and brings life back to my dull hair but its’ quite expensive, and the Fekkai also does a good repairing job and restores moisture.

frb-best-hair-intensive-mask-alterna-caviar-fekkai-protein-rxTo slow down colors from fading, I like to use Fekkai Salon Technician Color Care Rapid Results Moisture Mask. It revives the color and deeply moisturizes my hair. When my hair feels relatively healthy but requires a pamper, I reach for the H2O Milk Silkening Hair Mask. It transforms my dry and frizzy hair into silky soft and smooth, and I can sniff my hair for the whole day for that heavenly scent. I always bring a tub of KERASTASE SOLEIL Masque UV Defense Active with me when I go on vacation, as the sun; the chlorine; and sea salt guarantees to make my hair feel straw-like. This is the savior for replenishing overly exposed hair to become softer and radiant.

When my hair is still damp, I like to apply a tiny drop of KERASTASE REFLECTION CHROMA RICHE Luminous softening essence for highlighted or very sensitised colour-treated hair to the ends of my hair – it protects my hair from heat and completely smooths out the cuticles and makes my hair super shiny and sleek. I then a apply a pea size of Bumble and bumble Styling Creme around the roots before I blow dry my hair straight. It is a lovely lightweight styling lotion that gives the hair body and holds the style.

For next-day hair, I like to freshen it up with a nicely scented protein spray. The Aveda Brilliant Damage Control used to be my favorite but at the moment my heart belongs to Label M Protein Spray. If my roots are looking too flat the next day I would rely on my Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion which gives instant volume to my hair and requires zero skill. I don’t use hair spray much, but if I do my holy grail is the Alterna Hemp Maximum Hold Volume Lock. It is unlike any other hairspray I have used, as it gives instant body and hold to my hair without making my hair stiff! Unfortunately most sites do not ship aerosol products to Australia now, so I am really saving this one for special occasions!

Thank you for reading if you have made it to the end! 🙂

Your hair always looks amazing so I’m absolutely considering your recs, especially the ones of Fekkai because they’re easy to get over here

Reika March 12, 2012 at 11:17 am

Thank you birkie 🙂 I hate to have a bad hair day so I’m always quite picky with hair products 🙂

I love this post! My biggest weakness is haircare products, and I can only understand why you have so many in your bathroom. I see a number products that I have used before – i.e Fekkai masks. But at the end, I still think that phyto and kerastase outbeats Fekkai and Redken. Unfortunately, asian hair tends to be thick and flattish – or at least mine is! I’m on the hunt for a good volumizer.

Reika March 12, 2012 at 11:12 am

Totally agree wit you Tracy, phyto and kerastate outbeats Fekkai and Redkern! You should try Alterna volumising shampoo, it is amazing!

I’m not sure what Label M Protein Spray does for my hair but it does smell really good 🙂

Joyce September March 12, 2012 at 12:08 pm

What a coincidence! I’m currently working on a Kerastase post 🙂
Rather intrigued with that Caviar masque, does it smell fishy? Fekkai is another brand that I’ve been meaning to try, but have not really sat down and browse through the website and reviews.

Hi have you tried anything from kevin murphey? He is australian, and i am from croatia and i just adore! Their hair products!

Reika March 13, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Thanks for the recs ivana! I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet but I have a lot of things about them, my HD also recommends KM to me 🙂

ivana March 14, 2012 at 8:03 pm

yes you definitely must try it becasue you live in australia 🙂 and becasue those are the only products i love for hair……they smell great , are from natural ingredients…and i did not like any hair product for a long time now! you’ll see….i had one AVEDA for curly hair and thought its great but this from KM is just 2 times better 🙂 smells fantastic too…

your hair always looks so silky and smooth! I have wavy, sometimes frizzy hair and like kerastase products as well. I think, I will try out alterna next time. good to know, that I am not the only one with a lot of hair ptoducts 😀

Reika March 13, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Hehe high five Claire! Love Alterna products, their caviar range is the best but it’s only suitable for very damaged hair. If your hair is relatively healthy it will make your hair feel slightly crunchy due to the protein in it. But they have other ranges for different hair types.

Claire March 14, 2012 at 10:56 am

my hair is very dry (I have dark brown, almost black hair and I dye it lighter). I think I should invest in the caviar mask, going back and forth with this one.

Hi Reika!

Great post on your hair products, your hair looks gorgeous in your pics and I’m looking to try the KERASTASE RESISTANCE BAIN DE FORCE Reinforcing Refinishing Shampoo and the CIMENT ANTI-USURE for conditioner but I wanted to ask if those products were really rich/ heavy because my hair is more fine and I worry it might cause build up. But I do need the extra nourishment at the ends, what are your thoughts?

Thanks again n___n

Reika March 13, 2012 at 12:55 pm

The kerastate resistance line is made for nourishing and strengthening damaged hair. Does your hair break easily or has been chemically processed? If so the resistance shampoo and conditioner would help and they are not so rich so it won’t weigh your hair down. BTW I only apply conditioner to the bottom half of my hair.

Krystal March 14, 2012 at 2:09 am

Thank you for the feedback n___n I will definitely have to try it now. My hair is pretty healthy but I’ve got noticeable split ends and I do have color in my hair but has been growing out for a while, so I wanted something that will nourish and revive cause I’d also like to grow my hair out and I need healthy ends for that! Thank you again Reika for posting, love it!

popblush March 13, 2012 at 1:03 pm

I just recently coloured my hair using a light ash blonde hair dye- and I can feel my hair needing some care and treatment! Thanks for this, I might try the Kerastase products.

Jess March 13, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Thanks for sharing all your hair products, Reika! I have tried out some of these previously, but as I’m not provided with the best hair structure neither, I’m still on the lookout for better products myself.

Currently, I’m liking the Shiseido Tsubaki white line for damaged hair quite a bit.

Maria March 14, 2012 at 5:51 am

thank you for the post.
i love a lot this Fekkai line, so i think i can try other products from your list – seems that we have the same taste in hair products 🙂
by the way, have you tried redken? i think it’s also great!

Reika March 15, 2012 at 1:26 pm

Yes I have tried redkern. I love their extreme range (which is designed for damaged hair). The All Soft range is a little too rich and weighs my hair down a bit. What is your recs for Redkern darl?

Maria March 15, 2012 at 5:31 pm

yep, i love exactly the same lines of redken!!! i can’t say that i prefer extreme to all soft – i love both them… right now i’m on Joico products, but i don’t like it in the way i like redken.

Jess March 19, 2012 at 10:44 am

I always admire your hair in your photos, so thanks for sharing the tips! Can I ask where you go to get your hair coloured? I live in Sydney and have similar hair to yours and find it so hard to find a hair dresser that understands colouring asian hair

Tina May 7, 2012 at 11:09 pm

Great post (very slowly catching up on missed posts)!!!
I feel your pain, my hair is bleached and frizzy, so I totally understand where you’re coming from! I too think that the Resistance range by Kerastase is excellent and the Protein Rx mask has been my favourite for months now!
Tempted to try the Shea Butter shampoo after this! Thank you! 🙂 xx
