Mascaras Talk – Givenchy, Covergirl and L’Oreal

April 2, 2013

A quick report on my bi-monthly mascara road-test! As usual, I normally use 3 new mascaras (a mixture of drugstore and high end) every 2 months, and unfortunately for the last two months my lashes have been looking quite bland and deflated as I didn’t find anything extraordinary.

1. My biggest disappointment has to go to the highly raved Givenchy Phenomen Eyes Waterproof Mascara. The waterproof version supposedly holds the curl better, but it failed on me. It straightens my lashes like a flat iron, and clumps several lashes into one with a minimum lengthening effect. Worst of all, I cannot even use it on my lower lashes without getting it messy. Mind you, I am very skillful in terms of applying mascara on my bottom lashes but I just can’t make it work with this ball-shaped wand. You either love or hate this mascara based on the reviews I have read, and I am clearly on the hater’s side!

2. The Covergirl Clump Crusher by lashblast is another disappointment but performs slightly better than the Givenchy. This mascara doesn’t hold the curl either, but it separates the lashes and adds natural volume and length without any clumps as the name suggests. The wand is about the same size as the original lash blast, and it makes the lashes softer and look more natural looking compared to the original version. You would like this one if you have naturally thick and curly lashes.

3. The L’Oreal Lash Architect 4D Waterproof is the best out of the three, but not good enough for a repurchase. It wins in lifting and holding the curl, and the formula gives natural volume and keeps the lashes soft and fluttery. It also stays put on me for at least 12 hours without smudging. I am not particularly fond of this wand as it doesn’t help to separate the lashes one by one. It thickens the lashes by grouping a few together, so I always need a lash comb to comb through as an extra step… It is not a deal breaker as I am quite pleased with the end result once it is fixed with a comb, but there are just too many other mascaras for me to explore.

Have you found any great new mascaras lately?

I feel the same way lately…my mascara looks good when I leave the house, but when I look in the mirror a few hours later. De-flation! Do you have an all-time favorite mascara you can recommend?

I have a few – I like the KissMe Volume and Curl, Maybelline Falsies Waterproof (I swear by this one), Helena Rubinstein’s lash queen waterproof and Nars Larger Than Life Volumising Mascara

I’m a huge fan of Cover Girl Lash Blast Length for the most natural look, but I rub my eyes a lot so I like the least clumping possible!

I find the original CG Lash Blast is quite smudge proof!

Sorry I didn’t say which one I use: it is the Stretch xtreme precise finish waterproof mascara. I’m in New York so I get it on the USA site.

Hi Reika,
I love your blog and your taste in makeup and always get a lot out of your tutorials. Please keep writing! I wanted to say that I love the Shu Uemura mascaras, particularly the new one. It holds the curve exceptionally well, never clumps lashes and stays put. I think the wand is good, curled and helps to separate the lashes. I think you will find the mascara working nicely for you. Have you tried the Shu’s mascaras?

Hi Reika,
I have been working my way through mascaras like you have. I’m glad to read that I’m not the only person who feels dissatisfied with so many mascaras :) . I concur with your assessment of the Phenomen Eyes mascara. However, I do love the newer Givenchy mascara, Noir Couture. It holds the curl well as well as adding length and volume. I’m not sure if it’s available in your market. For a great drugstore option, I also really like a newer Maybelline mascara, The Rocket Volume Express. It is the best Maybelline mascara I have tried. It also holds the curl and gives great volume, length and color. Unfortunately, it does require extra work in removal, even using an oil based cleanser. Good luck on your quest–I hope you find a HG one someday soon!

Hi Lauren, thank you! I love all of your recommendations!
I am eagerly awaiting the new Maybelline Rocket Volume Express to be launched in Australia! I have also heard a lot of good things about Noir couture, and I need to get myself a sample first as I have lost faith in Givenchy’s mascaras…:-P

Reika!

You must try Kevin Aucoin mascara! It has seriously ended my search for the perfect mascara! You can buy it from Mecca Cosmetica for about $39. No matter what brand i previously used (Lancome, Dior, YSL etc) i always got embarrasing smudging underneath my eyes, even if i didnt apply it to my under lashes! But the Kevin Aucoin formula is ingenious! NEVER any smudging and when it comes to bedtime, all i have to do is wet my lashes and the mascara rubs off in little silicon like clumps and doesnt become a liquid mess like other brands! Seriously cannot rave on enough about this brand!!

Thanks Emma! Does KA’s mascara help to hold the curl? I have very straight lashes…

I also have an Asian background (Part Taiwanese, Japanese, German, Danish and English) with long lashes. My lashes have never held a curly shape very well with the past brands of mascara that i have used, even with using a curler! But ever since i tried KA its never been a problem! They make a curling and volumising mascara. Ive tried both and although the curling mascara is great, i have found that the volumising mascara works best for my lashes and to be honest its so effective that i dont even need to curl them anymore! The formula is so great at sculpting the lash because it has a light silicon texture and it perfectly holds my lashes in place all day to all night long. It really is kind of hard to describe just how great this product is, its something that one has to experience…and when you do trust me when i say you will never go back! $39 may be a bit costly for mascara but i am more than happy to pay for it, because it is so unique and there is honestly not another product like it in the market.

You can tell im a happy chappy that i no longer have to spend my life searching for the perfect mascara :) haha

You should try the Serge Lutens – I just got mine. It’s amazing, absolutely no smudging and amazing wear!

my current can’t-put-down mascara is the Etude House 3 Step Volume Mascara – while it’s a bit gimmicky, the brush is ideal for asian eyes/lashes and the formula holds a curl and doesn’t feel hard or clumpy on the lashes.

Thanks for the info faye! I have never ever tried Korean mascaras in my life, and you got me really curious!

I just bought the Clump Crusher mascara recently too and, like you, I was disappointed. I MUCH prefer the original version, which is my go-to mascara. I found the wand of this one a bit too hard and plastic-y (I really like the soft, silicone bristles of the original) and like you, it didn’t hold a curl for me either :/

The L’Oreal mascara is one of my fave; it separates lashes well, especially the bottom ones and doesn’t clump. I just got the Diorshow New Look Mascara, not sure if you have it. I love how lengthening it is! Cue the dramatic effect!

Hope you’ve been well, and congrats on being a Mummy soon! Xoxo

Hello :) I’m ginger but I have long straight lashes and I can only use Max Factor Clumpy Defy mascara :) I just curl my lashes after that I applied mascara and mascara hold my curl all day even it’s nonwaterproof:) I think you should try:) But doesn’t give crazy volume..
