Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation Review

July 7, 2011

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is one of my holy grail foundations. I have been using it ever since it was first launched! I am switching between many foundations, but this is the only one that I rely on when I have important occasions to go to. For example I wore it for my engagement party, on my wedding day, and any other events that I want my face to look “naturally flawless”, luminous and most importantly – to photograph well.

Some background information:

– Oil Free in a fluid texture

– Made in France, housed in a weighty glass bottle

– Natural finish with a sheer to moderate coverage

– My shade is 04 Light Sand which matches me perfectly

What I love about this foundation:

– I love the texture, it glides on the skin like silk and feels weightless.

– It is an all year round foundation for me. I like to use it in summer because it is long lasting and controls the oil. It is also ideal for winter as it works effectively with dry skin as well. It sinks into your skin and doesn’t enhance any dry patches on the skin.

– Love the natural and luminous finish. The coverage is buildable – on a normal day I would just use 1 pump for a sheer coverage but good enough to hide 70% of my imperfections. For special occasions I use 2 -3 pumps for a flawless coverage and yet still look natural. It is long lasting and stays fresh for a whole day.

– It looks good in day light, night time, and as mentioned earlier, it photographs extremely well! I want to mention that the makeup artist who did my makeup for my wedding, she had 2 huge closets of makeups!! (I am not kidding). After trying on so many options we still went for this one.

What I don’t love about this foundation:

– None haha..if I really have to be picky, I would say it feels slightly more silicony than other foundations because of its silky texture. However it is by no means full of silicone unlike the smash box primer…If your skin reacts to silicone you might want to try out a sample of it first.

As usual, I applied Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation on half of my face. I only used half a pump hence the freckles on my face are still showing through a bit, which I don’t mind as I find it quite natural.

What is your HG foundation and I am curious to know which foundation did you wear for The Big day?!

Currently, my HG foundation is Diorskin Nude, not having tried many, however… It matches my skintone very well and glides on effortlessly. I wish I could try out the GA Luminous Silk, seeing how many good things I’ve been hearing about it. I need a sample, urgently.

Reika July 7, 2011 at 1:35 pm

Hi Eta, Diorskin Nude is also my HG (did I mention I have 3 HG foundations..:P)l! I love it as much as the GA Luminous Silk. If I have to compare the two, the Diorskin Nude is even more natural looking whereas the GA LSF is more luminous and longer lasting.

Eta July 7, 2011 at 7:14 pm

Thank you very much for the friendly comment and comparison! The Diorskin Nude truly is a great and natural-looking foundation. My big day won’t be anytime soon, but I can see this being a good candidate…

I only recently discovered your beautiful blog and can whole-heartedly agree with most of your purchases. Unfortunately, being Europe-based, many products aren’t easily accessible, such as the gorgeous Byzance collection. You recently inspired me to import the Dogon duo, though!

Something I’ve been meaning to post – I’m impressed how you can wear cold and warm colours alike! You’re a stunning blogger and I hope for many more great posts in the future.

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:38 pm

Really appreciate your kind comments Eta! I know it’s a bit corney to say but it really means a lot to me!!

Amy July 7, 2011 at 3:24 pm

currently my HG foundation is the face fabric from Armani, but I really want to try this one!! you look great here again 🙂

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Thanks Amy, you are always so sweet!

Delyteful Speaks July 7, 2011 at 4:55 pm

I used to use this a long time ago but I don’t remember much about it.. So I recenly got samples of it and really enjoyed it.. But I have waaay too many foundations to be purchasing another one now :s But I’m saving my samples for special occasions..

At the moment, I’ve been tryna use up the foundations I’ve got.. So I wear a different one every day.. But really enjoying the Chanel Mat Lumiere & the Guerlain Lingerie de Peau is also amazing..

Great review hun.. Really helpful.. Thank you for that =)

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:35 pm

I really like Chanel Mat Lumiere as well, excellent for summer but a bit too dry for my skin type in winter.

Larie July 7, 2011 at 5:12 pm

I’m also looking for a foundation without SPF for my wedding…I will have to try a sample of this! Looks lovely, and still natural!

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Thanks Larie 🙂

Jen July 7, 2011 at 6:24 pm

You have amazing skin!! 🙂 I love using Guerlain’s Lingerie foundation. It provides the perfect coverage for me and is weightless and smells pretty 🙂

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Thanks Jen. You are always so sweet! I really want to try out the Guerlain Lingerie foundation..unfortunately I am currently on a foundation ban..have way too many..:-P

Elizabeth July 7, 2011 at 9:57 pm

Although I haven’t tried many liquid foundations (I use Mac Studio Fix powder with a fluffy brush day to day for sheer coverage – it does the trick, but isn’t amazing or anything), my favourite thus far is Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua (I’m BR10). It’s so lightweight, and I can hardly detect it on my skin even up close. It’s very natural, and super easy to apply with fingertips!

I haven’t tried Armani’s luminous silk, but would like to. I’ve read many wonderful reviews about it!

Reika July 12, 2011 at 2:15 pm

I have Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua too! And I absolutely love it, more than my pro lumiere. Like you said, it’s so easy to apply because it literally melts into your skin!

onlyfr33b33 July 7, 2011 at 11:18 pm

I need to wear something other than bb cream since it photographs so awfully on me… I just hate wearing foundation because it is so humid in Miami and I always feel like my face is melting off. Ah…I need to experiment more!

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:23 pm

Yeh that’s the problem with the greyish cast with most bb creams…I know what you mean..last time I was in Singapore and Malaysia..I couldn’t wear any foundation!

Shelley Marie July 7, 2011 at 11:32 pm

my HG is the giorgio armani lasting silk uv foundation in shade 2 and it is such a perfect color match! i also love the diorskin nude but lightest shade 010 ivory is still a touch too dark and pink for me. but i have used 2 bottles and bought a third.

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:17 pm

I am with you Shelley, Diorskin nude is just too good to be ignored..:-P Have you tried becca, i know becca carries some really light shades.

Belle July 8, 2011 at 5:40 am

I’m with you! I’ve jumped around, but this has always been on my vanity. Best “big day” foundation, hands down.

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Thanks for agreeing with me Belle!

Janice July 8, 2011 at 6:11 am

Just recently stumbled onto your blog, and I love it!! I bought the Regard Signe De Chanel in Topkapi and the two blushes after reading your entry and finding out it was available in Australia ^^. Back to the topic at hand, like you one of my HG foundation is Armani’s Luminous Silk Foundation. I like their Lasting Silk one as well but unfortunately it doesn’t come in my shade (I’m a 06 in Luminous Silk). I’m currently testing out MAC Studio Fix after reading so many reviews on it. Compared to Armani’s, it gives a fuller coverage and definitiely more matte finish, I’m on the fence with this one as I’m scared to wear it too often in case it breaks me out (there has been some reviews saying it clogs the pores if worn daily =S)

Reika July 11, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Thanks for dropping by Janice. Love to know more Australian beauty junkies 🙂 Unfortunately I don’t have that much luck with mac fluid foundations (love the mineral skinfinish though), they either break me out or oxidize on me horribly…I have yet to overcome the fear of mac foundations haha..

Jade July 8, 2011 at 8:56 am

Sounds like a gorgeous foundation, my all time HG so far is Chanel Vitalumiere, it’s just perfect for my skin type 🙂

As for my big day I think I wore a Napoleon foundation, can’t recall which one 🙂

Reika July 11, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Chanel vitalumiere has been on my wishlist forever!! I still haven’t got it…:-(

cclarebear July 8, 2011 at 9:51 am

I haven’ t tried this. My HG is Shu Face Architect but I really want to give the GA a go!

Reika July 11, 2011 at 12:57 pm

I have read your review on Shu Face Architect, it really sounds wonderful! Unfortunately I can never seem to find the right shade for me from Shu…

Tasha July 9, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Love this post! We can really see the difference a foundation can make when applied to half your face.
Right now I am loving Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua since it holds up so well. During the summer I tend to do a lot of sports and, if anything, the foundation looks better as the day goes along. It doesn’t melt at all! I also love Nars Sheer Glow. It gives me a flawless, luminous finish but I save it for special occasions 😉

Reika July 11, 2011 at 12:53 pm

Hi Tasha, thanks for letting me know your hg foundation. I have no doubt that Chanel makes the best foundations! It is funny that we always tend to save what we love the most for special occasions isn’t it 😛

Mel July 11, 2011 at 8:11 am

Hey Reika, what an interesting review 🙂 i have heard so much review on GA luminous silk foundation and so happy to read in your blog.
you mentioned you used 4 Light Sand , i need some reference to MAC for example, what MAC foundie number are you using e.g. 20, 25? allows me to match to your skin tone and see where we stand. how about dior nude, are you using 10,20? thanks so much! you look flawless with this foundie now i know why u use it for your wedding. for my wedding, the makeup artist use covermark and covermark is also a very popular brand in japan and well known for it’s long lasting ability but i think for that luminosity and glow, GA still wins hands down! 🙂

Reika July 11, 2011 at 12:43 pm

Hi Mel, thanks for your lovely comment 🙂 To answer your question, I am a diorNude in 20, Chanel Lumiere in 20 Claire, Nars in Deauville. I don’t have any mac foundation with me at the moment, as far as I can remember, I was NC15-20…
I love covermark! Used to get them in sasa, unfortunately they aren’t available anymore..

Koala July 12, 2011 at 2:06 pm

I recently discovered your blog and love the lovely pictures and reviews, although sometimes I don’t have access to the same products as I live in a different part of the world. I would like to know how you compare the Armani with Nars sheer glow (I’m Deauville too!) because I’m thinking of using the Nars for my wedding as it looks good on photographs and is my exact color-match (at least in the spring/summer) but since reading your review on the Armani, I may change my mind. Is the Armani one as long-lasting as the Nars one? Which one is the best in your opinion? Does the Armani one cover pores as well as the Nars? Thank you so much for your help and all your reviews!

Reika July 13, 2011 at 1:53 pm

Hi Koala..I really thought you are from Australia based on your name..:-P
Anyways to answer your questions, I PERSONALLY prefer the Armani over Nars sheer glow. Reasons being:
– Nars sheer glow can enhance the dry patches on my skin, Armani LSF doesn’t.
– LSF is more longer lasting and controls oil better than Nars sheer glow
– Coverage of LSF is better than Nars
– In terms of covering pores, Nars is better! As I have mentioned LSF is silicone based so it has a tendency to sink into your large pores. I normally use a buffing brush like Mac 188 to buff it away for a smoother finish.
Hope it helps and thanks for your lovely comment 🙂

Koala July 13, 2011 at 11:18 pm

Thank you so much for your help! I’ll try to get a sample of the Armani, it sounds really good. And I do love koalas, they’re so cute. But I’ve never seen one for real (only on tv), never been to Australia…
About the Nars, that’s right it does emphasize dry patches, it only looks good on me when my skin is exfoliated.

Reika July 14, 2011 at 1:12 pm

I know..that is why I don’t reach for Nars that often..when there are other foundations that make my skin look good without the need of exfoliating..:-P
I do love the dewy finish of Nars sheer glow though!

Mel July 13, 2011 at 2:37 am

thanks Reika dear, i have bookmarked your site for my daily read not just in my pc not also my ipad 🙂

have a great week !

Reika July 13, 2011 at 1:54 pm

I am so flattered..:-) You are sooo sweet Mel!!

marida July 16, 2011 at 3:37 am

Currently, I vote for Shu Uemura Face Architect foundation in liquid and new compact. I almost finish my liquid one. The best match for Asian yellow skintones. It brightens the face and never look thick or cracks. For minerals, I chose Glo Minerals, but the shades are more western, less yellow, they are more neutral, pink and olive.

Reika July 17, 2011 at 7:15 am

I need a new compact to carry it around with me for touch ups, thank you so much for the recs! I’ll definitely check it out 🙂

Mabely November 16, 2011 at 7:31 am

hi i just purcharsed perfection lumiere from chanel i used one i am like it but i t -zone oily i want to know is giorgio armani is better than chanel

Reika November 23, 2011 at 11:22 am

The GA foundation is designed for dry to normal skin, it doesn’t control oil as good as the chanel.

nouna November 27, 2011 at 7:05 pm

I love your bare skin, I think you don’t need foundation 🙂

Alice February 25, 2012 at 2:02 am

It’s so funny because I just googled about a particular foundation and came across your blog. Funny because I got married on 7/2/11 and used the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in B40. Loved it for summer and have been using all fall. But I’ve been searching for something with more coverage for winter and I LOVE GA’s Luminous Silk but they don’t have it where I live now. I googled to find something close to it and saw your blog that mentioned the DiorSkin Nude. I went and got it today (#031) as the Nars Sheer Glow not only made me look ghostly white but it flaked on my forehead. I’m Asian and 42 years old so definitely it’s tougher to find good matches. Thanks for your blog!

Min March 13, 2012 at 5:42 pm

Thanks for the review! I have Lasting Silk, which I don’t think is as good because seems a lot thicker. Have you tried that one? xo

Maryana July 20, 2012 at 4:38 am

Having read a couple of reviews, I bought this foundation to try out. To be honest, being all my life used to RMK, Suqqu, Sonia Rykiel and Lunasol foundations, this felt much much inferior quality wise. Another popular foundation (i think it is #1 in sales this summer)in Japan by the same maker (L’oreal) is Helena Rubinstein Prodigy. It is very close to GA in feeling, probably more siliconey, therefore the coverage is slightly better. The products of GA and Helena are very similar indeed, they even share the same tubes like BB creams made by a Japanese subsidiary of L’oreal Cosmeroll.

Angela September 26, 2012 at 4:11 pm

You have the most beautiful, informative, tasteful blog. I just discovered it today and will enjoy lapping it all up. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.

I have spent a fortune (or two or three) on powder foundations from Dior, Chanel, Estee Lauder, Clarins, Shiseido, Clinique, Bobbi Brown and on and on. The test for me is always – will I shine after a few hours, does my complexion look great. I’m Asian with an oily t-zone. My absolute fave is shu uemura face architect now renamed fit glow (strange!). And as often mentioned, it looks better after many hours of wear versus when it’s newly applied.

Reika September 29, 2012 at 10:48 am

Aww..thank you so much Angela. Your comment made my day!!
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll definitely check out the Shu fit glow when I get a chance as I have heard a lot of good things about it 🙂

chloe November 19, 2012 at 12:28 pm

im currently in the market of buying a new foundation when i stumbled upon your blog. love everything by the way, love the detail you put into everything and the pictures you take. im currently running out of my YSL le teint touche eclat foundation and was thinking of changing to armani or chanel to give it a try. have you tried their maestro foundation yet? i was just wondering what were your thoughts on that foundation in comparison to this one ( the armani luminous silk)
thanks 🙂

Reika November 20, 2012 at 11:54 am

Hi Chloe, sorry I haven’t tried the maestro foundation yet…it’s been on my shopping for so long!
