If I have previously said ‘I don’t like matte nails..” *cough cough* I take my words back! After I purchased my Chanel Le Vernis in Pirate and Rose Cache, I went back to the counter and tested the Chanel Mat Top Coat Velvet. Surprisingly it was very nice and did not make my hands look dull as I thought it would. For those of you who enjoy wearing nail polishes, I think the Chanel Mat Top Coat gives a modern spin.
It applies the same as any other top coat – transparent and smooth, and dries into a matte velvety finish. It was quite fun watching my nails changing from glossy to matte.
Although the Chanel SA recommended that it is best to be used with darker colors, I just felt like experimenting with all the various shades. The Chanel Le Vernis shades swatched here:
- Particuliere; Pirate; Vendetta; Blue Boy; Mimosa

The mat top coat also dries up the nail polishes within minutes, which is an added bonus. However the only downside is that it fades within a few days as by day 3 my nails would look semi-matte.
Do you like matte nails? And do you think it looks the best on dark colors?

I definitely prefer it on the darker shades but I like the look of it more than I expected too. Does it still feel smooth or does it have a slightly different texture to glossy nail polishes?
Yes it has a ceramic like texture and does feel smooth
The mat top coat definitely produces an interesting look, but the finish still looks incomplete to me – I’m itching to swipe a glossy coat over it.
love the way the red looks, but I still think i’ll pass. your blog is so wonderful!
WOw these are so fun, perfect for the fall. I wouldn’t think I would like matte colors either. But these are so pretty! !

The matte top coat gives your nails a ceramic look. I’m not sure if this is the trend for me, but it certainly makes a huge difference!
I like matte colours on occasion but prefer a shiny finish most if the time
don’t think I’ll pick this one up as I have CND’s matte top coat AND Essie’s Matte About You ( don’t know why I have two!!)
Both matte toppers do not fade but I find the colours chip after a couple of days!!
I also have a bright punk one from OPI’s matte range , which is a gorgeous matte but sadly chipped within a day – a day! It dies say on the label that it’s not as lOng lasting as the regular, but little did I know….
wow..Petrina I am amazed at how many matte toppers you’ve got!
I love the matte red – gorgeous!
Wow, the mattes actually look really good! It’s so cool that the Top Coat can be used with different shades. Bummer that it fades within 3 days though.
I haven’t discovered matte nail colors for myself, but who knows if I’m gonna change my mind too (like you)?!
I’m not a fan of matte colors, but I avoid bright nail polishes, and anything other than pink/nude in general…although I like brights on my toes.
i have yet to buy a matte topcoat, its more practical than buying new bottles of matte polish. I think the 3 day max effect is alright as I tend to change nail colors twice every week anyway. Thanks for sharing this Rei, Mimosa looks really cute when matte
I did try it!! It looks amazing on Particular* its this amazing taupe by Chanel. I think its the same one in your picture!! HOT!
For 26 USD…. i say pass – unless you really like a dulled effect. I agree with the ceramic look others mention, as my nails went from super slick, to looking like my father’s slip casts before they were fired. Incomplete.
