Chanel Inimitable, YSL Volume Effect Faux Cils and Maybelline the Falsies Volume Express Waterproof Mascaras Reviews

June 13, 2012

Mascara is one makeup item that I am consistently impressed by with drugstore brands, and disappointed by high end makeup brands on many occasions. I have been using the Chanel Inimitable Mascara, YSL Volume Effect Faux Cils Mascara and the Maybelline the Falsies Volume Express Mascara Waterproof for the past two months. In summary, I am kicking myself that I spent a total of more than AUD$100 on Chanel and YSL mascaras, whereas the performance of Maybelline Falsies totally blows the former two out of water and only costs a faction.

Let’s begin with the one I am least impressed – Chanel Inimitable Mascara

For my medium length and volume, and deadly straight Asian lashes, this mascara did absolutely nothing to my lashes. It doesn’t add any volume and length to my lashes after several coats, and it instantly makes my lashes straight again after I curl them. On a good note, the formula is very thin so it defines the lashes beautifully without any clump. And it doesn’t budge on me for the whole day. Overall it is a very natural mascara, would be great for those of you who are blessed with thick and full lashes naturally. But it’s a waste for me.

Moving on to the YSL Volume Effect Faux Cils Mascara which I really wanted to love..but it didn’t fully agree with my lashes either

I had tried this mascara a long time ago, so I couldn’t remember how I felt about it and got persuaded into buying it again when the YSL SA swore by it. It makes the lashes instantly thicker, fuller and more black with one coat. You can achieve a more dramatic result with 2 – 3 coats without any clumps. Unfortunately it weights my lashes down instantly as the formula is quite thick and heavy. The walk-around is to apply a coat of mascara base (my HG is the Kate mascara base) to hold the curl, then apply this mascara on top of it, but it can make the lashes look too thick and clumpy. It also dries up very fast – I opened the three mascaras around the same time and the YSL mascara is already 90% dried whilst the other two are still going strong. I would love this mascara if a waterproof version of it was released.

Maybelline the Falsies Volume Express Mascara Waterproof is the cheapest and The BEST!!

It does everything I wanted from a mascara. It only takes one coat to volumize and lengthen the lashes, and holds the curl all day long.  I have previously raved about the Japanese drugstore mascaras, but this one is just as good or even better. Unlike some waterproof versions which tend to make my lashes stiff, the Maybelline Falsies feels light and soft and make the lashes look like feather. It can also be easily removed with most two-phase eye makeup remover. Best of all – it’s dirt cheap. I will keep buying it as long as it’s available!

Do you like Maybelline mascaras? There are so many Maybelline mascaras in the market…are there others that you would recommend?

I recently picked up the Maybelline Falsies on a whim after a tube of YSL dried up very quickly. I cannot believe how amazing it is!
I am also kicking myself thinking of all the money I have spent on mascara!

Reika June 13, 2012 at 2:24 pm

I TOTALLY agree with you kimberly!!

Fusshia June 13, 2012 at 4:02 pm

I ll definitely have to give this a try. After hearing your reviews I really wanted to try the Asian mascaras but the shipping fee definitely held me back. If you say this is just as good, I definitely trust your opinion!

My lashes are straight, like yours. I enjoy the Falsies as well, and having tried both the Chanel and YSL ones I have to say that my experiences with the high-end mascaras mirrors yours (esp. the part about the YSL drying out!)

However, I’d suggest the Maybelline Full ‘n Soft mascara – I think I like it even better than the Falsies. It is the best daytime mascara I have ever used from both an effectiveness and value perspective! Lashes are never crinkly or clumpy, even after multiple coats, and it lengths and volumizes beautifully.

Love Maybelline Falsies mascara! The type that I bought is called Flared and has a slightly curved brush.

I received a tube of L’Oreal Lash Architect mascara free with a purchase of their hair colour; it makes my lashes super long, but doesn’t give them volume.

I first curl my lashes with Revlon’s Extra Curl (it never pinches) and then use L’Oreal’s Lash Architect with a sweep of Maybelline Falsies on top – and voila – I have Zoe Deschanel lashes!

Totally agree about high end mascaras esp Chanel! They don’t do anything for me and smudge like crazy especially the Sublime one! The SA ( in KL) recently tried to give me a sample size with my purchases and I promptly req for a swap :o.

My faves are the Kiss Me Vol & Curl and Covergirl Lash Blast ( original) – will try your Maybelline rec!

I’ve tried “Great Lash” from Maybelline and was very disappointed. I just threw it in the bin !
I agree with you for “Inimitable” from Chanel, it’s not worth the money ! I found it too liquid and not black enough.
So far my very favourite mascaras are the ones from Helena Rubinstein, they are really great and I’ve used them for a long time now. Can’t go wrong with them !
I’ll definitively give a try to the “Falsie Volume” you mention.
Thanks for your reviews, I love to read your blog 🙂

I recommend Maybelline Cat Eyes mascara, it has a thin comb which is great for reaching the stubborn lashes at the end of asian eyes ^_^

Elizabeth June 14, 2012 at 1:58 am

Totally agree! I’ve ALWAYS worn high end mascaras, and on a whim when I forgot my mascara bought Maybelline Falsies. I fell in love! I have naturally curly lashes, ok thickness and length. This stuff makes them stunners!! The Falsies version with the Wings on the tube (Falsies Flared? maybe? can’t remember) is also excellent, the brush is fatter (kinda like the DiorShow mascara wand) and also curved. I love it even more than the original.

My favorite mascara is Max Factor’s Xperience mascara. I can put a lot of coats on and it stays put, feels really light, and the brush is my absolute favorite(it separates my lashes so well without clumping). I used to love Maybelline’s Great Lash but found it made my eyelashes quite “crispy”. With Max Factor, it’s so lightweight and non-irrritating.

I love the brushes so much I’ve actually replaced the brushes of some MUFE Mascaras with the Max Factor ones. They actually fit! I will never again use any mascara that has a pipe-cleaner-ish brush.

After purchasing high end mascara : Diorshow- which ended up drying up within 3mths & no holding power of my lashes for the entire day. 🙁
I am also more impressed by drugstore mascaras.
I am currently rotating within Maybeline Falsies, Maybeline Magnum, Heroine Make Mascara in Long & Curl. Overall, they are good in giving ample volume & good keeping curl in place.

merrybelly June 14, 2012 at 6:42 am

I agree!! I love this mascara! 🙂

sleepandwater June 14, 2012 at 7:55 am

I agree, drugstore mascaras are awesome (Maybelline especially!). I’m currently using and completely loving Maybelline Define-A-Lash, but I have heard great things about the Falsies Volume and really want to try it after reading this post 🙂

Cindy June 14, 2012 at 10:36 am

Hi Reika

You should try Maybelline Turbo Boost waterproof and Maybelline Hyper Curl waterproof. I think both are Asian exclusives? I’ve never seen them in Australian stores.

What do you think about Lancôme Hypnose? I love it for its dramatic thickening and lengthening effect despite the fact that it gives me raccoon eyes after 8 hours wear ( I just have to check the mirror frequently lol)

inci gencer June 14, 2012 at 10:46 am

I hated YSL too but Chanel inimitable is one of my favorite mascara after DiorShow Iconic and Helene Rubinstein Lash Queen.I agree that they’re too expensive so I need a cheaper but a good one sometimes. I will definetly give a try this one.I recommend you Rimmel London Glam Eyes Lash Flirt which works very well too for its price,if it’s available in your country.

Megan June 14, 2012 at 12:10 pm

I like Falsies too but I’m currently obsessed with Great Lash lots of Lashes, I’ve never really liked Great Lash mascaras previously but this one is great!

Ra June 14, 2012 at 3:41 pm

I’ve tried all (Dior, Chanel, YSL, Max F, Rimmel etc) and decided on Maybelline Colossal..

Sara June 15, 2012 at 10:07 am

I have also straight lashes and I always use waterproof mascaras, because they hold a curl. I liked Chanel waterproof Inimitable, but now I’m testing Eyes to kill wp by Armani.
I’m liking it, because it gives much more volume to my lashes than Inimitable, but I have to comb my lashes.

onlyfr33b33 June 15, 2012 at 4:54 pm

I haven’t tried Maybelline Falsies yet, but I adore Covergirl Lash Blast Length. It gives an incredibly natural, defined lash and is so cheap. I’ll definitely try Maybelline Falsies next after hearing so many good things about it!

SoLoveTiffany June 16, 2012 at 10:54 am

I picked up the falsies both waterproof and non waterproof, i like the non waterproof better, though i have a very very fav! Loreal million lashes! I only have the waterproof one, its a drier formula but i love it, lots of volume and last ten hrs straight, does not smudge whatsoever, my lashes is the hardest thing to work with too

Holly June 16, 2012 at 11:09 pm

I have the same lash problems as you do, and I completely agree that the high-end mascaras pale in comparison to the drugstore ones. Dior Show, Definicils, etc. etc. just don’t compare.

You HAVE to try Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal in Waterproof — I found this to be even better at holding a curl and adding much-needed volume than The Falsies! If you try it, I’d love to know what you think!

SoLoveTiffany June 17, 2012 at 1:20 pm

What kind of lashes do u have? Have u tried mac mascaras?

Holly June 18, 2012 at 4:42 pm

I have the typical stick-straight, stabby Asian eyelashes. 🙂

And no, I can’t say I’ve ever tried MAC mascaras before.

Reika June 18, 2012 at 2:25 pm

Thanks for the rec Holly! I will definitely give the Maybelline Colossal a try and report back to you 🙂

Holly June 18, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Thanks for the reply, Reika! I really hope you like it!

elliade June 17, 2012 at 9:32 am

Im currently using Majolica Majorca’s Lash King and Heroine Mascara, which are both from drugstore! Just purchased BAdgal lash mascara from Benefit online yesterday! I will try the Maybelline mascara you have reccomended the next time! 😀

Reika June 18, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Wow girls, thank you all for the recs! I am so overwhelmed! I have taken every single suggestion down and will use it for my next round of mascara shopping 🙂

Flyavsted June 19, 2012 at 6:58 am

Love this mascara! My favorites these past 10 (!) years have been Helena Rubenstein (all of them) and Lancome Hypnose, but I love this one even more. Love your recommendations!

Reika June 19, 2012 at 2:39 pm

My favorites have always been HR mascaras as well, but the Maybelline falsies completely blows me away and l also prefer it more than HR now 🙂

rena June 24, 2012 at 1:13 pm

hi rei,
my all-time fave is Maybelline Full and Soft. it seems a bit underrated even though it has been around for so many years, so i assume it is selling well. if you dont like stiff lashes that waterproof mascara tends to cause, try this – hence the name, full and soft.
the only expensive mascara that i like is lancome hypnose, but the tube dries out in a month, not worth it, will not repurchase. kevin aucoin is great but again, very small amount for what you pay for.
loreal voluminous is as good as maybelline but you cant get it in australia.
currently using covergirl blast fusion – not bad, but will go back to maybelline full and soft.

art June 24, 2012 at 6:03 pm

The difference you saw was the waterproof factor. There is an Inimitable inWP and also an YSL Aquaresistant so probably those are the two ones that could have helped you.

I love Maybelline and I don’t think I’ll ever spend so much on mascara but I’m just saying there are high end products that can help you, just remember, if you have straight eyelashes, waterproof mascara is the one to keep your curl.

laura June 27, 2012 at 3:05 am

do you like the waterproof best cos of the curl/hold that it provides? or another reason. thank you!

Reika June 27, 2012 at 6:17 am

Yes, I need the waterproof to hold the curl for my straight lashes. The normal version seem to weigh my lashes down.

Kyung July 8, 2012 at 6:40 am

Has the Maybelline been non-transferring thus far? It seems that’s what eventually happens with almost all mascaras and eyeliners too, for me.

onlyfr33b33 July 17, 2012 at 11:48 pm

Been using the Falsies and I’m SO impressed. Only thing is, it’s very difficult to take off, so I have to find a stronger eye makeup remover so I don’t lose all my lashes. I think it’s so good for a long day of work, but I’m torn. Covergirl Lash Blast Length is so soft and natural looking and easy to remove. Falsies looks great and holds a curl but I might end up saving it for more dramatic moments.

Reika July 19, 2012 at 12:39 pm

Good to know you are impressed by Falsies 🙂 Have you tried the Neutrogena eye makeup remover, it’s gentle but effective enough to remove the most stubborn mascara within a minute (without losing any lashes)!
I like CG lash blast as well, but I prefer Falsies for more volume.

Laura July 25, 2012 at 11:23 pm

I have to say I agree about the Falsies Volum Express Waterproof. It really holds a curl on my thin, stick-straight Asian lashes. I usually don’t have problems with transferring, but ocassionally when it is very hot and humid out, I will see some transferring from where my eye lashes hit my brow bone. It’s a quick wipe away.

I like Maybelline Colassal Waterproof too, but I think there is more transferring with that formula for some reason.

I also love Mally Volumizing Waterproof (which gives similar results for more money) and L’Oreal Voluminous (original) because Carbon Black smudges terribly.

Kas July 28, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Hi! The Maybelline one is great! I like it very much and I like how the brush grabs the lashes from the root and really holds the curl. one of my luxe fave mascara was the YSL Singulier – that was probably the most volumising intense mascara I tried (next comes Helena Rubenstein Lash Queen Feline Black) but the YSL dried up in a jiffy which made me so sad. Have you tried Heroine Make mascaras? Awesome also – very inky black and works great for me (rather hard to remove though). And Too Faced Lashgasm works well for me too! 🙂
