I knew this would happen when I jumped on the Burberry Makeup wagon a while back – my addiction for them is growing at a “non-rational” pace. I have collected most of the items that I have set my eyes on, and today’s review is for the lust-worthy Burberry Sheer Eyeshadow in Mulberry and Midnight Brown. Both are dark neutral shades with an edge which is right up my alley. I bought them at the Burberry counter without even swatching them, so that was how confident I was with them!
Mulberry is from the Burberry Fall 2012 Makeup Collection. A deep burgundy brown shade with iridescent micro shimmer, which looks absolutely gorgeous from the pan. The color translates to the skin quite accurately, with a much stronger mauve undertone compared to Midnight Brown (see my swatch below). Just like the other Burberry eye shadows – the ultra finely-milled texture gives a silky satin finish with a gleam. Although it is a stunning shade on its own, it’s not the easiest color to work with for my skin tone. I needed to be quite cautious with the intensity during application, otherwise it could have looked a little muddy on me. But once I had made it work I loved the finish.
Midnight Brown is the clear winner between the two. I have read raving reviews and it completely lived up to my every single expectation! It is a taupe shade with gold and silver micro shimmer, and translates to a beautiful complex chestnut brown (with one swipe only) shade with a slight gold tinge on the skin, and you can build up the brown intensity by layering more. As I twist my hand to a different angle I see the undertone variations. It’s almost like looking at 50 shades of brown (and that’s my corny joke of the day!)
Left to Right: Mulberry; Midnight Brown

Note: Pictures of wearing Midnight Brown will be shown in my Becca Summer 2012 Makeup Collection Review post which has just been released in Australia.
Bottom Line: If you are still hesitating to get Midnight Brown, then you gotta pull the trigger now! It’s one of the most classic, complex taupe brown shades I have ever used! Mulberry is a nice-to-have but not a must-to-have imho. Both eye shadows are available here and here in the US, and for Australian customers you can buy them through Harrods with international shipping available (which I find is the cheapest after the deduction of VAT). In case you don’t know, Harrods is doing 10% off on everything this weekend!

I have those two colours and absolutely love them. If you already have lots of nice neutrals, I agree, not a must have at all. I still think it’s more about how those colours transform once applied, they have a nice, very soft iridescence to them. I love the look you did with them, very beautiful, as always Reika.
I love Midnight Brown, it’s quite possibly the most beautiful, multifaceted eyeshadow I own. Mulberry’s exactly my kind of colour, but so far I’ve had no luck finding it in stock at any counters. It looks stunning on you.
Wow really..can’t believe Mulberry is all sold out…I had the same problem with Midnight brown when it first came out.
I’ve been lemming these forever and you’ve added Mulberry to my wish list! It looks fantastic on you! I think Burberry beauty is available at David Jones in Chadstone and Bourne St in Melbs and Bondi Junction.. not 100% sure though..
Yes there is a Burberry counter in Bondi. Harrods always have the new collection earlier than in Australia, so I always buy them online, and they are also so much cheaper!!
Both these shades are just beautiful as you’d expect from Burberry. They look luxurious and really pigmented.
Very beautiful.
I guess it sold out hehe
Harrods doesn’t have midnight brown
Now I have to stop myself from going to DJ’s to check it out in person.
Thank you for your detailed review! I recently fell in love with the Burberry Beauty collection and Midnight Brown is an absolute must-have!
I lovelovelove Mulberry! I really wish I had a Burberry counter near me.
Hi! I am a big fan of you, this is my first time commenting to compliment you and tell you how i looooove your look with theses Burberry gems.
And the gorgeous lenses compliment the make-up perfectly! May I ask you a question: which brand make these?
Thanks a lot and keep up ^^
I have Mulberry but not Midnight brown yet (lol). Mulberry appeared slightly muddy on me – the first time I wore it.
But I wore with L’oreal Infallible in Tender Caramel today & it looks less muddy! I think Mulberry needs more time to experiment with and I think I’m falling slowly for it.
Ahhh Burberry! What can I say… they just get it *right* every time!
Midnight Brown is probably one of my favorite eyeshadows ever! When in doubt I reach for that, and Taupe Brown is my next favorite especially to wear with shimmery shadows like the ETK.. perfect! I’ve recently acquired Almond and Chestnut and they are both gorgeous neutrals that really do so much for a polished look. Midnight Plum is my latest acquisition and Khaki is next on my list… Like you, I’ve been slowly picking a lot of the single shadow shades since the brand was launched.
I just received the lip velvet I ordered in the shade Rose Pink, I think I’m gonna love it, also got a sample of the velvet foundation, will tell you what I think of it after I’ve tested it
Hi Rei,
Btw what brush do you use to apply eyeshadow all over your lid?
Burberry has amazing eyeshadows
Sorry abt the late reply..I thought I had!
I am using the suqqu e/s brush large.
I have and love Midnight Brown and Mulberry is on my wish list — it looks so beautiful and soft in the look you did – really gorgeous!
I was hooked into Pale Barley after reading your review – and I stomped out and get one LOL!
it looks wonderful on you though!!
Was a bit hesitant with Mulberry coz the shimmer in the shadow doesn’t seem to show up after applied onto my lids
None of Burberry e/s shimmer shows on me, but I don’t mind as I like the gleam effect
What did U put on your cheeks and lips? Love this look
Thanks
I wore the Jill Staurt custard lip pot in apple custard in the photo.
Hi…I love the look that you have done here. May I ask what contacts are you wearing in the pictures?
Thanks
yes~I love your contacts too, can I know the brand? Also, did you use mulberry for area under the eye? It looks very light and delicate.=D
Love the makeup, you look stunning! Btw what lens are you wearing, they look pretty on you!
