My Picks for the Best Base Makeup 2011

by Reika on January 5, 2012

This post is inspired by some of my favorite bloggers who have done an extensive summary of the beauty products they loved the most in year 2011. I thought it was such a good idea to show you some of the amazing products that I came across last year (or years before..). As a beauty junkie I have way too many products to showcase so I will be breaking them into several posts, and today’s post is all about the best base makeup products that I have absolutely been in love with, and I am pretty sure my appreciation for them will be carried over to year 2012.

Unfortunately I haven’t had the time to review many products in this post yet, but I am sure they will appear sometime in the near future!

Best Makeup Primer: the award goes to By Terry Teint De Rose. The most luxurious primer I have ever used – the hydrating texture, the  scent and the pink rosy color just blows me away every time I use it.

by-terry-teint-de-roseBest Illuminating Makeup Base: the award goes to Dior Radiant Base. It gives a “your glow but better” effect.

Best Tinted Moisturizer: the award goes to Sunday Riley Effortless Breathable Tinted Primer. One of their signature products. I was at Barneys shopping for Sunday Riley skincare, and I noticed there were so many (gorgeous) girls dropping by just to purchase this primer over a short time! So I had to have it and it is my holy grail makeup base now on a good skin day.

Best BB Cream: the award goes to Dr Jart Blemish Base BB Cream, love the hydrating yet lightweight liquid texture.

dr-jart-water-fuse-blemish-base-balmBest Liquid Foundation: the award goes to Giorgio Armani Designer Lift Firming Foundation (reviewed here). I don’t know one single person who doesn’t love this foundation?!

giorgio-armani-designer-lift-smoothing-firming-foundationRunner up: Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation. This was my first high end foundation that I got it when I was in High School, and I was hooked on to it ever since. There is always a backup in my vanity drawer.

chantecaille-foundationBest Compact Foundation/Powder: the award goes to Tom Ford Translucent Finishing Powder. My new discovery and this is THE most finely milled powder I have ever used!

tom-ford-translucent-finishing-powderRunner Up: La Prairie Cellular Treatment Powder Foundation (old packaging). A little goes a long way and it gives a flawless coverage.

Best Contouring Powder: the award goes to Suqqu Balancing Cheek in OSHAGECHA (the shade on the right). Provides a perfect subtle contouring that just blends in with my natural skin color.

Best Concealer: the award goes to Cle De Peau Concealer (have discussed in this post)

cle-de-peau-concealerBest Under Eye Brightening Concealer: the award goes to YSL Touche Eclat (have discussed in this post)

Best Loose Powder: the award goes to La Mer Loose Powder. The most finely milled loose powder inthe market and gives a soft focus finish. This is my second tub and my first one lasted me a few years!

la-mer-the-loose-powderRunner Up: Cle de Peau Loose Powder. It has a slight pink tinge to it rather than totally translucent. Provides a brightening effect and a flawless finish.

Hi Reika! First, I’d like to wish you a happy new year.
Could you do a full review on the Tom Ford powder? The packaging is beautiful, but I’d like to know exactly how this powder performs before spending my money (is it fragranced, is it good at keeping skin matte…). Thank you for your reviews, it’s very helpful and the beautiful pictures always bring some sunshine to my day.

Can’t wait to see your other ” best of 2011″ beauty posts :) being an NC15 what shade do you have the CDP concealer in?

Reika January 8, 2012 at 10:17 am

It’s shade beige, the lightest shade. It looks quite yellow from the tube but once it is blended out it matches my skintone.

Would I be able to use the Dior foundation with Shiseido 131 brush? I am obsessing over either one, but I’m not sure if I should get both! Still, I don’t have much luck with liquid foundations. Any cream/powder ones you recommend?

Reply

Reika January 8, 2012 at 10:25 am

The Shiseido 131 brush goes with any type of foundations. What is your skintype…oily? When I was younger I had oily skin too, and I tried tons of powder foundations but they all ended up looking blotchy by the end of day. The only thing that worked for me was the MAC prep and prime, it keeps the oil at bay for the whole day! Go get a sample darl.

Happy New Year Reika!
Do you think eye shadow base is a necessity? The makeup artist at the Chanel counter was trying to sell me eye shadow base. You showed NARS eye shadow base in one of your earlier post. I would like to know your opinion on eye shadow base. Thanks a lot.

Hello Sandy Happy New Year!
Yes I can’t live without eye shadow base. I have oily eye lids so an eye shadow base stops the creasing, and it also helps to even out the eyelid and makes the eye shadow apply better with better pigmentation. My favorite is the Nars e/s primer :-)

Amazing favorites, Reika! Yes, I must claim the Armani Designer Lift Foundation as my favorite foundation of the year as well! So, ‘Thank you!’ again for your review on it!

And I see a few more items that goes onto my favorites of the year list!
I’m going to pick up the La Mer Powder soon! ;)

That’s good to hear Jess! I hope you will like the La Mer Powder as much as I do :-)

Reply

Jess January 8, 2012 at 11:28 pm

Oh, I totally forgot to ask which shade of the La Me Powder you got. The translucent one? I know I can rely on you, as we seem to have quite the same skintone (GA Designer Lift #3 is perfect on me!).

Reika January 10, 2012 at 11:41 am

Hi Jess, La Mer loose powder comes in matte or shimmer. I bought the matte one in shade 01 creme which is translucent.

Reply

Jess January 18, 2012 at 11:33 pm

Thanks Reika! So, I guess the ‘Translucent’ one is the one with shimmer then, right? I’m going to trust you and get 01 Crème then! Just hope it doesn’t look too matte, as I do like a glowy, ‘skin-shine-through’ finish. :)

I’m still on the fence over Dior’s base. The last time I visited their counter to check it out, I was distracted by the loose powder and decided to walk away before any damage could be done lol

Reika January 8, 2012 at 10:35 am

Me too I get distracted all the time :P

Reika, with the Sunday Reily Primer which shade (light or medium) would you recommend for someone that is NC25-30, Lasting Silk 5.5, B30 Chanel vitalumiere aqua?

Reply

Reika February 5, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Hi I am shade NC15, and I bought the Sunday Reily Primer in light. So I think shade medium would work for your NC25-30.

Have you ever tried the Burberry base? I am interesting between Dior radiant base and Burberry one but I can’t pick up,so I just ask you for a suggestion . How do you think?
Thanks :)

Reika May 14, 2012 at 2:42 pm

Sorry darl, I haven’t tried the burberry base yet…I have seen reviews of it and it does look quite similar to the dior radiant base!
